Rock mechanics and DFN models in the Swedish Nuclear Waste Disposal Program

چکیده

Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) is a modeling framework for fractured rocks. The core element the description of geological medium as network discrete fractures that can be either generated from statistical distributions or imported deterministic surfaces. It an alternative to continuum methods with both advantages easily integrating properties fracture networks, and not assuming any homogenization scale. DFN has been extensively used describe flow supported by fact connectivity, which constitutive organization, key fluid percolation. Application geomechanics also promising and, conversely, models will benefit rock mechanics integration.

Nuclear waste disposal.

-Experiments are described in which dose-response data have been obtained for EMT6 mouse tumour cells growing in vivo and exposed to various cytotoxic agents. A comparison has been made of the response of solid tumours in the flank and of rapidly growing lung nodules. The results are discussed with regard to their cell kinetic implications and compared with our results for the chemosensitivity ...

Mobile fission and activation products in nuclear waste disposal.

When disposing nuclear waste in clay formations it is expected that the most radiotoxic elements like Pu, Np or Am move only a few centimetres to meters before they decay. Only a few radionuclides are able to reach the biosphere and contribute to their long-term exposure risks, mainly anionic species like I129, Cl36, Se79 and in some cases C14 and Tc99, whatever the scenario considered. The rec...

Nuclear Energy and Waste Program

radioactive waste is currently the preferred means of disposal for many countries worldwide. The role of ESD's Nuclear Waste Program (NWP) is to assist the U.S. Department of Energy, the United States, and other countries in achieving the safe disposal of high-level radioactive waste—by means of high-quality scientific analyses that encompass modeling, laboratory and field experiments, and tech...

Chemical and Nuclear Waste Disposal: Problems and Solutions

The problems of waste disposal have always been with us. In biblical times, the residents of Jerusalem always burnt their wastes in the hideous Vale of Gehenna. This gave way to burial of waste or sometimes dumping it in shallow oceans. All too often the sewage pipes of the seaside towns did not even take the waste to the low tide mark; and the use of the deep oceans as a disposal site has been...
